Gentlemen,
374
Colonial Secretary's Office,
Hongkong, 25th. August, 1910.
With reference to my letter No. 1 in 6854/08
of the 23rd. instant, I am directed to forward for your informa-
-tion the enclosed copy of a despatch, dated the 18th. instant, which has been addressed by His Britannic Majesty's Consul- „General at Canton to His Majesty's Charge ́d'Affaires at
Peking.
2.
From it you will gather that the Opium Prohibition Bureau informed Mr. Jamieson at a personal interg
-view that the opium in question was seized, not because it
had not paid the new levy nor because it was found in transit, but because of certain infractions of established regulations
committed by those who had charge of it. In the opinion of the
Consul-General as conveyed to His Excellency the Officer
Administoring the Goverment in a letter dated the 24th; instant, it *** is for you to prove the contrary, and, unless
you are able to do so, Mr. Jamieson states that he does *not
Chinese subjects propose to interfere with the punishment of for transgressing the laws of their own country."
I have etc.,
(sd.) A. H. Thomson,
Messrs. David Sassoon and Company, Limited.
Colonial Secretary.
